TikTok's Latest Warning: Why Blue Swimsuits Are a No-Go For Kids

TikTok’s Latest Warning: Why Blue Swimsuits Are a No-Go For Kids

Swimsuit season is here, and parents everywhere are on the hunt for the perfect Swimsuit Safety for Kids. However, while cute designs and patterns are certainly important, there’s another factor that should be top of mind: safety.

According to a viral TikTok’s video from mother Nikki Scarnati, the color of a child’s swimsuit can play a major role in visibility in the water. Scarnati’s video shows her daughter swimming in a light blue swimsuit that blends in easily with the water, making it difficult to spot her in certain lighting conditions.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children between the ages of one and four, and choosing the right swimsuit can help improve visibility and prevent accidents. Experts recommend choosing brightly colored swimsuits that provide increased visibility, particularly in and around water.

Adam Katchmarchi, the executive director of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, suggests opting for bright colors like yellow, orange, green, and neon shades. On the other hand, white and light blue swimsuits can easily blend in with the water, making it difficult to spot a child’s presence.

A couple of years ago, Alive Solutions Inc. conducted a study to test the visibility of different swimsuit colors in both pool and lake settings. The study found that bright and contrasting shades, particularly neon colors, were the most visible underwater. Conversely, white and light blue swimsuits were the least visible in pools with light-colored bottoms, while darker colors could be mistaken for shadows or debris. Neon orange, green, and yellow were the most visible in all settings tested.

While choosing the right swimsuit color can help improve visibility, it’s important to remember that active supervision is the most critical factor in preventing drowning incidents. As Alive Solutions Inc. notes, “it doesn’t matter what color your kids are wearing if you aren’t supervising effectively and actively watching.”

Swimsuits

When shopping for swimsuits for kids, parents should prioritize safety alongside style. One-piece swimsuits and rash guards offer more coverage and protection from the sun, and brightly colored options from popular brands like Speedo, Nike, and Billabong can help improve visibility in the water.

When it comes to styles, parents can opt for fun and colorful designs like neon shades, bold prints, and stripes to help their child stand out in the water. For boys, trunks in bright colors like neon green or yellow can be a great option, while girls may enjoy fun prints or neon one-pieces.

It’s also important to consider other safety gear, such as life jackets, particularly for younger children or inexperienced swimmers. By prioritizing safety and choosing the right swimsuit and gear, parents can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for all.
